Now open your question paper and look at Part One.
There are seven questions in this part. For each question there are three pictures and a short recording.
Choose the correct picture and put a tick in the box below it.
Before we start, here is an example.
How did the woman get to work?
Woman: Oh, I’m so sorry I’m late - I missed the bus. I was trying to decide whether to walk or go back and get my bike when I saw my neighbour. Luckily he offered me a lift, because he works near here.
The first picture is correct so there is a tick in box A.
Look at the three pictures for question 1 now.
Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will hear each recording twice.
One.
Which present has the girl bought her mother?
Jane: Hi ... it’s me, Jane ... I've got Mum’s birthday present. I think she’ll like it... Yes, that’s right, a silver one. She’s always writing letters, so she’ll find it useful ... Mmm. I thought about earrings but she seems to have such a lot of jewellery, and Dad bought her a watch last year. I’m sure she’ll like what I've bought.

Two.
What will the prize be in the painting competition? Woman: We need to get a prize for the children’s painting competition. Last year, Jane won and I think she was given a box of new paints.
Man: It should be something different this time. How about some money? That's always popular. Woman: Yes, but it would be nice to get them something that reminds them of the competition. I think a book about painting would be a good prize. Man: You’re right. Let’s do that.

Three.
Which photo does the girl dislike?
Girl: I got the photos back! Look, this one of us on the beach is just brilliant!
Boy: Yes ... You must get a copy for me to keep as a souvenir. It was a great day, but that other one’s good too!
Girl: I don’t know why you think so, the dress I’m wearing is awful. I only bought it because it was half-price. The one of us on the boat isn’t bad, look.
Boy: Mmm ... apart from the fact that you look seasick!

Four.
What should the students take on the school trip? Woman: Now you won’t need any money for the bus or your entrance ticket to the zoo tomorrow, because that’s already paid for. But bring some small change for when you get thirsty and want a drink. The only food or drink allowed on the bus is fruit. Bring some with you because it’s a long trip, and you’ll get hungry. No food or drink must be taken into the zoo. And you’ll need to bring all your coloured pencils for the work I’m going to ask you to do there.

Five.
Which subject does the boy like best?
Boy: I really like the new chemistry teacher - he let me spend the lesson drawing the equipment for an experiment. The Maths teacher is much more serious, but that’s still my favourite subject. I used to like Geography, but the teacher we have now gives us so much homework.

Six.
What time is the dance class today?
Girl 1: Hi Judy - do you want to play tennis after school - say about 4.15?
Girl 2: Mmm - that would be fun but I’ve got a dance class. It’s usually at a quarter past five but it’s half an hour earlier this evening, at a quarter to five. It takes me ages to get into my dance clothes so I really don’t think I’ll have time today - let’s try tomorrow.
Girl 1: OK!

Seven.
Which vegetables do they decide to put in the curry?
Man: So for the curry, which vegetables do we need to add?
Woman: Well, this celery that I've just washed, although we won’t need all of it... and then we'll need some slices of carrot and a yellow pepper if you’ve got any.
Man: There's one in the bottom of the fridge, but the carrots are a bit old. Could we use this cauliflower instead?
Woman: I don’t see why not. Good idea.
Now listen again.
That is the end of Part One.
